SPCM 101 - Fundamentals of Speech
 


SPCM 101 FUNDAMENTALS OF SPEECH
(3-0) 3 credits. Introduces the study of speech fundamentals and critical thinking through frequent public speaking practice, including setting, purpose, audience, and subject. This course cannot count as social science/humanities credit.

Course Objective.
At the conclusion of Speech Communication 101, students should be able to:

  • understand the need for adequate research in effective oral communication;
  • understand the importance of organization in effective oral communication;
  • develop the techniques of presentation in effective oral communication;
  • consider the role of audience analysis in effective oral communication;
  • develop the use of mechanics in effective oral communication.

Student Outcomes.
In Speech Communication 101 students will demonstrate effective communication by being able to:

  • choose materials for an oral interpretation selection;

  • present an oral interpretation to the class.

  • present a brief speech of introduction;

  • choose/narrow topic for informative speech;

  • present the informative speech to the class;

  • provide written/oral feedback for the informative speech;

  • choose/narrow a topic for a demonstration speech;

  • present the demonstration speech to the class;

  • provide written/oral feedback for the demonstration speech;

  • choose/narrow a topic for a persuasion speech;

  • present the persuasion speech to the class;

  • provide written/oral feedback for the persuasion speech;

  • prepare appropriate visual aids for speeches.
