Overview of engineering assessment at SDSM&T

There are 9 ABET-accredited programs at SDSM&T (list below), and they have accreditation visits in fall 2004.
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering (decision will be made in 01/03 about readiness for accreditation evaluation)
  • Geological Engineering
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Metallurgical Engineering

This means that by December 31, 2003, program self-studies need to be in first draft form. And this means that the achievements documented in the self-study must occur over the next 15 months (3 regular semesters).

The April 2002 mock ABET evaluation showed the ABET programs at an implementation level 2.0 or 2.5, and they need to be between level 4.0 or 5.0. (See the report by Dr. Arden Davis attached below.)

Maturing assessment in these programs is do-able but not a foregone accomplishment since the ABET 2-loop assessment process takes time, collaboration, effort, and goodwill.
