EMERGENCE OF DISEASE
This site examines disease and global change, with a special focus on Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome. It is meant to inform the general public as to how ecosystem changes, even in the tropics, can ultimately affect them near their home in South Dakota.

Examine this web site, check out the links, and note the recommended reading list as your first steps in learning about how you and your family may be at risk.

New diseases discovered deep in the heart of the tropics CAN affect you! With the increased ecosystem changes, globalization and the ability to travel around the world in approximately 24 hours, diseases can be delivered virtually to your door. Be informed of all risks and know the symptoms of these scary diseases and protect yourself.

Attached is a paper written by SDSM&T graduate student Carrie Herbel, a paleontologist by trade at the Museum of Geology, for ATM 590. She also prepared a PowerPoint presentation used on April 25, 2002, at the SDSU Department of Nursing seminar. Her presentation was geared towards demonstrating how disease can affect those living in South Dakota and the need for continued medical research and prevention. This presentation is also attached for those interested.
