Campus Emergency Procedures - Shelter-in-Place

1.  Shelter-in-place will be announced via a “blast” e-mail, calling tree, and/or a loud siren – sounding continuously for at least 30 seconds.

2.  Find nearest shelter area (room with a door – do not use elevators):

  •  Lock/barricade the door
  • Shut the windows and curtains/blinds covering the windows
  • If in a laboratory, reduce all operations to a safe condition as quickly as possible.  The sash on chemical fume hoods should be pulled down to the fully closed position. Discontinue any laboratory process that might create a hazard if chemical fume hoods, bio-safety cabinets, or building ventilation were turned off.
  • Sit/crouch down in areas that are out of sight from doors and windows
  • Take roll call, including the names of any visitors
  • Turn off the lights and remain quiet and calm
  • Stay in contact with internet, if available for situation updates (Ensure the light from the monitor is not visible to the outside of the room.)
  • Do not evacuate on the fire alarm unless instructed by University Personnel
  •  Do not open the door for anyone

TIPS:  Be observant and keep others calm.  If you are in the room with a terrorist be prepared to get down if the room is rushed by law enforcement.  They need to quickly identify their target when they enter the room.

3. Shelter-in-place will remain in effect until it is lifted via authorized personal.

  • In a drill, your building/facility manager or Facilities Services will notify you that the drill is completed. You may also assume the drill is completed 10 minutes after you receive the blast e-mail and/or hear the siren.
  • Faculty and staff will be contacted by phone and/or blast e-mail OR Facilities Services, Campus Safety or other university personnel will unlock the door to the room you are in to notify you that the emergency has passed.
