The Department of Geology and Geological Engineering at SDSM&T is uniquely located in the magnificent geological setting of the Black Hills and adjacent Badlands. Undergraduate through graduate programs of study often utilize the rich resources offered in this part of the country as the focal point for laboratories, field trips, and student and faculty research.
Each of the programs of study within the department offer 4 areas of undergraduate emphasis. In the geology program, these are:
- economic geology and mineral exploration
- igneous and metamorphic petrology
- structural geology and tectonics
- stratigraphy and sedimentation
In geological engineering, diverse fields such as ground-water resources, subsurface contamination, slope stability, environmental site investigations, petroleum , and minerals are studied. Areas of emphasis emphasis include:
- ground water
- environmental planning and natural hazards
- geomechanics
- petroleum and minerals
