Greek and Roman Art
Greek culture evolved out of the Agean cultures of the Minoans and Mycenaeans. It is known to be the first democratic society in the world, although women were not allowed a voice in politics. Humanism had its beginning in Greek culture and is recognized in the quote, "Man is the measure of all things."
Philosophical inquiry and the search for balance and perfection inspired the culture and can be seen in the evolution of Greek art. The three major periods of Greek art are Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic. The changes in style relating to each period came about relatively quickly in comparison to stylistic changes in other early cultures.
