William Bradford
Journal #3
William Bradford: 1590-1657

If a reader is interested in hearing great stories of adventure and excitement, William Bradford is a great writer to get into. He told of some great challenges and triumphs in his lifetime and he lived in a very interesting time period. It was a time of curiosity and discovery. Bradford was an explorer who discovered many new lands.

It definitely wasn’t easy for Bradford. He had some trouble, at times, keeping his men in high spirits. For example, on page 68 he talks about his men underestimating the ship and it’s ability to hold up to the harsh conditions. “They entered into serious consultation with the master and other officers of the ship, to consider in time of the danger, and rather to return than to cast themselves into a desperate and inevitable peril.” This was a quote from page 68 that shows the kind of trouble they faced. Bradford ended up convincing them that they had passed the point of no return and it would be longer to go back, than to push on ahead.

This is one small example of the kinds of things that William Bradford endured and recorded. He was a prime example of one of the early explorers who was looking for a better life in a new land. Like Columbus, he wanted to see what the rest of the undiscovered world had to offer.
