Why is KTEQ off the air?

Why is KTEQ off the air?

Prior to August 2000, KTEQ’s tower space had been donated by KOTA (local broadcasting station) for many years. In August 2000, KOTA upgraded its transmission capabilities; this upgrade included increasing its effective radiated power (ERP). KOTA’s new ERP was large enough to inhibit KTEQ’s transmission capabilities from that location. Subsequently, KTEQ removed its transmitting hardware in August of 2000. The FCC mandates a radio station must broadcast within a year period or the station will loose its license. KTEQ was silent for an excess of one-year and lost its license to broadcast in September of 2001. At the same time, the FCC stopped accepting license applications for non-commercial radio stations. At the time, no one knew that the FCC would still not be accepting non-commercial applications four years later. The ban on new non-commercial licenses is still in effect. This ban is not specific to KTEQ, but all non-commercial licenses throughout the USA.

KTEQ has taken steps to insure that when applications are accepted, KTEQ will be on-air ASAP (2006 looks hopeful).
