2008 Rocky Mountain Unconventional Gas Conference

Short Course:
Putting It All Together - Optimizing Fracture Design

October 15, 2008 (Wednesday)
8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Registration fee: $175 per person (includes box lunch)
*Limit: 30 participants

Sponsorship of this course by CARBO Ceramics and Insight Petroleum Consulting assists youth education programs. By registering for this course, you are supporting SDSM&T's efforts to create future engineers and scientists.

Course Overview
This seminar will focus on practical fracture optimization. Participants in this seminar will receive a written summary of 80 published field studies where profitability was improved by modifying the fracture design. A detailed review of specific fields will be conducted as time allows. Participants in this seminar will be able to optimize a fracture design to accommodate many common damage mechanisms. The specific topics include:

  • 12 Common Myths and Resulting Mistakes
  • Realistic Fracture Geometry
  • Realistic Conductivity - "The Big Picture"
  • Proppant Types and Characteristics
  • Conductivity Testing
  • Non-Darcy Effects
  • Multiphase Flow
  • Understanding Crush Testing
  • Embedment, Temperature, Cyclic Stress
  • Fines Migration/Plugging
  • Gel Cleanup
  • Fracture Optimization
  • Well Testing, Effective Frac Length
  • Field Studies

The seminar will be informal; questions and discussions are highly encouraged. Handouts and reference materials will be provided to all participants.

Instructor's Biography

After completing his degree at the Colorado School of Mines, Mike Vincent worked as a petroleum engineer for two years with Amoco in Denver, and for six years with ARCO in Anchorage, Kuparuk, and Denver. He started Insight Consulting in 1996, specializing in fracture design and reservoir analyses. Mike has been consulting with CARBO Ceramics since 1998, where his work is focused upon helping clients improve fracture designs by accurately predicting production under realistic conditions. He has authored over 15 technical papers, has been awarded two patents, and has instructed over 100 seminars on fluid flow, fracture design, and practical production optimization. Mike is very active in SPE, serving as a technical editor, and serving on steering committees for numerous SPE meetings. Mike frequently serves as a guest lecturer at universities and presents fracturing schools to numerous companies and organizations.
