The program is organized into a series of four
4-day residential experiential enrichment camps for middle and high school
students, based on the South Dakota School of Mines (SDSM&T) campus in Rapid
City. Students may invite a family member to accompany them, and to share
residence hall accommodations if they are not from the immediate Rapid City
area. The camp experience will include on-site geosciences research experiences,
incorporating field exploration and data collection, writing and presentation of
results. Camp participants will interact with a diverse team of geoscientists
and educators to explore the scientific and cultural significance and their own
connections to important Black Hills sites such as Wind Cave, Harney Peak,
Buffalo Gap, Bear Butte and Mount Rushmore, which draws 2 million visitors
annually. Activates will be organized along four major themes: |
|
- Earth (Maká) - identifying and
understanding the geology of the Black Hills and Badlands.
- Fire (Peta) - the contemporary and
historic roles of fire in the forest and prairie.
- Water (Mni) - the function and
importance of surface waters, aquifers, and hydrology.
- Wind (Taté) - meteorology of the Black
Hills, a unique climatological system of the Northern Great Plains.
