1. Bill Clemente thanked the faculty for coming, while Galardi passed out handouts for the meeting agenda and evaluation form for online classes. Clemente immediately turned the floor over to Batterson and Hinrichs, who provided handouts regarding a power point presentation they constructed regarding their recent visit to the HLC meeting in Chicago, February 6-9, 2007 attended by Dr. Tande, Assistant Deans Batterson and Kupper, and Paul Hinrichs. Batterson described the major results of the conference and the five key core assessment areas, which were future preparation, student learning and effective teaching, acquisition, discovery and application of knowledge, mission and integrity, and engagement and service. Batterson stressed the focus of assessment should be on assessment of student learning and a shift from the input/output model to documentation of evidence of student learning. Hinrichs then proceeded to discuss the remainder of the power point presentation,  which included a review of how faculty should review their 2001 program goals and align them with the mission and values of Peru State College, along with whether or not those goals line up wit program assessments. Hinrichs also discussed the steps to assessing online education, course assessment records, and how the assessment team might be restructured according to the VPASA office. Hinrichs informed faculty members present the overall goal was to review the old program reviews and compare them to current ones. Hinrichs advised he had the sole copy of the 2001 program goals, and Dr. Tande advised she would arrange for those program goals to be distributed to the associate deans for distribution to faculty members.

2. Dr. Clemente discussed the coding of the assessment plan, which was distributed. Clemente suggested the plan could be used to meet or suggest areas that would assist in the assessment process, and how each area met one of the five areas discussed by Hinrichs and Batterson.  Clemente also advised the assessment team would be meeting more frequently, establishing a rubric, and planning to formalize the program review. Clemente also discussed the development of program level assessments, institutional assessments and online course assessment. Clemente advised an outline or plan would assist the assessment team in these areas. Clemente also advised the name of the assessment team might be changed.

3. Clemente advised that Turnitin would be implemented this fall, and faculty would be trained in it during Fall 2007 orientation.  Discussion moved towards assessment of online classes and proctored exams. Clemente advised proctored exams would not be allowed for online courses at this time, and Dean Drew reiterated that. Dean Drew also advised this topic was not “dead” and proctoring of exams would be revisited as the online program and assessment develops.

4. Clemente advised Ted Harshbarger, Assessment Director, who was not present, advised him that many students were “Christmas treeing” the CAAP tests and not taking the exams very seriously. Clemente advised that Harshbarger had told him that students seemed to be uninterested in completing the CAAP exams proficiently. Discussion followed in regards to what to do with students who did not take the CAAP tests seriously, especially the seniors. One suggestion involved not letting the seniors graduate unless they obtained a certain score on the exam. Faculty members were asked to consider this situation, and provide feedback to their assessment committee representative or a Dean.

5. Clemente discussed the online evaluation form that was distributed. Clemente discussed how this form would be used for blackboard courses, traditional courses, and hybrid courses. Cheryl Blue suggested we revise the name of the form to “Course Evaluation” form to cover all areas. Clemente thanked her for her input and advised this would be done. Clemente advised this form would be implemented in Fall, 2007.

6. Clemente advised Judy Grotrian was here to present on Faculty College. Dr. Tande then initiated the topic by advising the State College Board of Trustees had requested reforming this educational opportunity and allowing faculty members to exchange ideas, discuss issues, and take turns as a campus hosting it,. Grotrian then provided a handout, explained the program in depth, and advised the dates this year would be May 10 & 11, 2007 at Wayne State College. The key areas for discussion would be service learning, faculty research, online education, and international programs. Grotrian advised that any faculty member who had received a teaching excellence award and wanted to lead this effort on the campus should contact her.  Grotrian also advised if faculty wanted to participate, that they should contact her by March 19, 2007. Grotrian also advised the Board of Trustees would be covering the expenses and hotel rooms, meals and transportation would be provided. Grotrian advised five psychology faculty members from Chadron were already planning to make a presentation. Grotrian advised members would be leaving Wednesday and coming back Friday of the event. Grotrian also advised if faculty wanted to make a presentation to contact her.

7. Tande advised there was a free luncheon being hosted for faculty members following the all assessment meeting in the Bur Oak room. Several student groups and Creative Dining Services were paying for this.

8. Crook advised History Day would occur February 21, 2007 and 211 students would be participating.  Crook also thanked those who advised they would be assisting in judging, and if any faculty member wanted to judge in the future to contact her.

9. Clemente asked faculty members to consider delivering a program assessment if they had not done so. The next meeting for an all faculty assessment meeting was April 13, 2007.

The members of the assessment committee currently are Bill Clemente, Dennis Welsh, Cheryl Blue, Greg Galardi, Brad Griffin, Randy Waln, Ted Harshbarger, Dean Todd Drew, Associate Dean Bruce Batterson, Associate Dean Jodi Kupper, Associate Dean Patrick Fortney and Dr. Tande.
