Assignments for British Novel for Monday, September 27, and Wednesday, September 29.
I asked that you read to Chapter 20 last week and hope that this week we complete primary work on Wuthering Heights.
On Monday, we will see the remainder of the William Wyler adaptation of the novel that premiered in 1939.
These final fifteen chapters chronicle the rise of Heathcliff and his eventual downfall, if you will. So pay attention to how Heathcliff attempts to fulfill his "moral teething" and fails to accomplish these desires with respect to earthly affairs, at any rate. Again, pay particular both to the methods Heathcliff employs to exert his vengeance and the eventual revelation of his limitations in this regard.
To this end, look closely at the contract between Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. The evident contracts between these locations separated by three miles find reflect in the significance of Hareton and Cathy and their eventual union.
To no small degree, they temper each other, providing, if you like, a compromise between the overpowering passions that characterize the Heights and its inhabitants and the over-cultivated Grange. To what extent, then, does this less-passionate couple accomplish what pretty much destroys Heathcliff and Catherine?
We will continue the discussion of this novel next week, but we will also begin Great Expectations.
