Schedule for Creative Writing

Untitled Document

This semester we will pursue this General Outline:

As the course syllabus indicates, the semester will cover three three major areas of Creative Writing: Poetry, Non-Fiction, and Fiction.

For each section, you will read assigned chapters from your text books; you will find these assignments in the Assignment Folder on Blackboard and on the Creative Writing Web page, where you will find links to, among other things, your Weekly Assignments and Class Notes.

The web page also contains links to the Creative Writing Blog.

We will pursue a similar list of assignments this term, so you can listen, for example, to the video message from last year by using the class Archive.

Weeks 1-4:

In the first section, which will be a bit longer than the others, you will write approximately six or seven short poems (following some general guidelines) and complete various exercises. Among other things, you will compose Haiku, short poems following the model of William Carlos Williams, poems utilizing senses and images, poems about objects, etc.

Weeks 5-6:

In section two, you will write short pieces of Creative Non-Fiction, imaginative essays--without footnotes!--based on your personal experience, the foundation of all sophisticated Poetry and Fiction.

This genre of writing has become increasingly popular.

Weeks 7-8:

And in the final section, you will compose at least one short story and a scene utilizing specific vocabulary.

Final Project:

Each writer will turn in a final project: a work of creative non-fiction or a short story.

As you will discover, you can write Poetry, Creative Non-Fiction, and Fiction about an identical experience. And reading on the Discussion Threads what others have written will provide you with an abundance of great ideas.
