Week THREE
Reading: Screening Space: Images of Wonder: The Look of Science Fiction, 64-99.
Reading: Anthology: Utopias and Dystopias: "Slow Tuesday Night" (359); "Repent, Harlequin! Said the Ticktockman" (367); "Everywhere" (717).
Viewing: Films: A Clockwork Orange (on demand) and Ghost in the Shell,(on demand) or Alphaville.
I will show Alphaville or Metropolis in Fine Arts 206 beginning at 5:30 Tuesday evening.
If you want a stunning post-holocaust experience that offers a disturbing look into a decidedly dystopic future, check out Chris Marker's famous short film La Jetee--this famous film provides the source for The Twelve Monkeys. Take twenty minutes to take in Marker's remarkable film.
You will also find at Netflix a large number of dystopian films, from the restored version of Metropolis to Mad Max ( I chose the three films assigned for variety, for you have a British, Japanese, and French film for your enjoyment.
Remember that you have a paper due; see the description in the Week Two Assignments.
And you can use alternative films for your essays--just ask me.
