POLICY

 

            The mission assigned to the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is established by the South Dakota Board of Regents and implemented through the programs and activities of the university.

 

PROCEDURES

 

1.      The Board of Regents has assigned the following mission, including programs and Organizational units, to the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology:

 

The role of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is that of a university specializing in undergraduate and graduate education emphasizing science and engineering.  Degrees are authorized at the baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral levels.

 

The following curriculum is approved for the University:

 

A.     Baccalaureate programs in chemical, mining, civil, electrical, geological, mechanical, industrial, and metallurgical engineering; mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, geology, and interdisciplinary sciences.

 

B.     Graduate programs: Masters degrees in chemical, civil, electrical, geological, mechanical, metallurgical, and mining engineering; chemistry, computer science, technology management, geology, meteorology, paleontology, and physics.  Doctoral programs in geology, materials engineering and science, geological engineering and a cooperative Ph.D. program in atmospheric, environmental and water resources with South Dakota State University.  A cooperative Ph.D. program in Meteorology with Colorado State University is authorized.

 

C.     Research – basic and applied – and scholarly and creative activities that reflect the interest and activities of its faculty and are consistent with the programs authorized above.  Inherent within the research function of the university is an expectation that externally sponsored research is a priority of the various faculties, particularly those engaged in graduate instruction.

 

D.     Continuing education opportunities, outreach, and public service to the state and region as well as some national and international needs consistent with the approved programmatic authorization listed above.

 

E.      Basic and applied research and services through the following approved original units:

 

Advanced Composites for Engineering Systems Laboratory

Black Hills Natural Sciences Field Station

Center for Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship

Computer Integrated Manufacturing Laboratory

Engineering and Mining Experiment Station

High Plains Center for the Materials and Manufacturing Industries

Institute for Atmospheric Sciences

Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institute

Museum of Geology

New Gallery

Ranch A Educational Center

Scientific Knowledge for Indian Learning and Leadership Program

Technical Assistance Program

 

II.         The university, through its faculty, staff and students, has adopted the following statements to describe its assigned mission:

 

·                     To prepare men and women for an enhanced quality of life by providing a broad educational environment which fosters a quality educational experience leading to baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate degrees emphasizing science and engineering.

 

·                     To contribute to the expansion of knowledge through programs of basic and applied Research, scholarship, and other creative endeavors.

 

·                     To utilize the special capabilities and expertise on the campus to address regional, national, and international needs.

 

III.       The university, through its faculty, staff, and students, has adopted the following objectives to provide strategic direction to the university in accomplishing the assigned mission:

 

·                     To make the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology an outstanding undergraduate educational institution, enhanced by quality graduate education.

 

·         To enhance our national recognition as an educational institution with     emphasis in science and engineering.

                                                                                                                                         

·                     To continue to develop centers of excellence in research and graduate education using faculty expertise, and to further develop interdisciplinary research that involves faculty from several departments.

 

·                     To create and continually assure an environment which nurtures growth of the intellect, character, and spirit of students, faculty, and staff.

 

·                     To build mutually beneficial partnerships with the broader community.

 

·                     To increase significantly the resources available to the institution.
