COOPERATIVE EDUCATION (CO-OP)

Cooperative Education (Co-op) provides students with the opportunity to integrate their classroom learning with "real world" work experiences in industry. The Co-op Program is a partnership with business, industry, government agencies and SDSM&T. Students are employed in positions related to their major and may obtain academic credit for their co-op experience.

Minimum GPA and other eligibility requirements for co-op positions vary among employers. Students accepting a co-op position register for a Cooperative Education (CP) course (CP 297/397/497) via Web Advisor for the semester or summer they are on co-op assignment. Co-op courses can be taken for 1-3 credit hours per co-op summer or semester. The variable credit hours provide students with greater flexibility in applying co-op credits to individual department's curricular requirements for graduation. Students should check with their department co-op coordinator for advice on the number of co-op credit hours for which they should register. Co-op credits may be applied toward graduation requirements in accordance with university and departmental policy. Because the work performed by a co-op student is equivalent to the workload of a full-time student, a student on a cooperative education assignment who is registered for CP credit shall be considered to have full-time status.

Students interested in participating in the Co-op Program should contact the Co-op Department Coordinators in their respective academic departments and also register with the Career Center to apply for co-op positions with companies recruiting on campus.
