Metallurgical Engineering is the branch of
engineering that develops and supplies the materials for virtually every
other engineering field. Three-fourths of all chemical elements are
metals from which countless alloys are made, so metals play a vital
role in nearly every aspect of modern life. Metallurgical Engineers
transform the earth's mineral resources into finished products by extracting
metals from ores, recycling materials, producing ceramics from metal
compounds for the myriad of material needs in the the advanced world.
A major emphasis of the field is the design of
materials that can be recycled and the recycling of materials to function
in an environmentally responsible way. Materials and metallurgical engineers
also determine the causes of material failures and make recommendations
to prevent such failures.
